Regina Mayer, a 15-year-old girl from Laufen, Southern Germany, rides her pet cow Luna as if she were a well-trained show horse.

The young girl always wanted her own horse, but her parents kept saying “no”, and since she had a stable full of cows at her disposal, Regina decided she was going to try and ride one. After hundreds of hours of training and many baskets of treats, she managed to teach Luna to jump over home-made hurdles, just like a show horse.

Regina remembers that she knew Luna was special ever since she was born, three years ago. The calf came right up to her, she wasn’t shy like most other young cattle, and they developed a special friendship ever since. The 15-year-old began riding Luna about six months ago and she even contacted a riding school in Switzerland, and received some tips on how to train and equip the bovine in a way similar to a show horse. The two went for long rides around the countryside of Southern Germany and Luna become more and more comfortable, especially since her friend Regina made sure to give her delicious carrots during each outing.

Young Regina Mayer says Luna is definitely very clever, she knows what she can do and what she can’t. Right now she’s able to jump over a-meter-high hurdles, but the rider is confident this year they will reach 1.20 meters. She admits people always look at her funny when they see her riding a cow, but she wouldn’t dream of trading Luna for a horse. The trained cow has become her best friend, following her around wherever she goes, something a horse would never do.

For former chef Li Zongwen a man's best friend is really his dog, as he looks after more than 140 strays in his home in China.

Mr Li, 59, has become a dog's best friend after adopting a number of stray and abandoned pooches.

Walkies must be a nightmare and dealing with the poop almost unimaginable because Li takes care of over 140 of the animals in his home in China.

Rescued from the streets on the outskirts of the city of Wuhan, they are given a roof over their heads and a meal to eat.

The rescued animals like to sit and watch as the former chef rustles up their grub in a big cauldron using a garden spade.

Taking care of more than 140 stray canines is no small task and the dog lover couldn't do the job without support.

Food and rent for the house costs 5000 yuan (about £480) each month, which is covered by people donating money to Mr Li.

Mr Liu told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields.

‘I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet,’ he said.

‘When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

I was a bit frightened, as I've been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature.’

Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi'an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species.

‘It's not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy,’ he said. ‘It's likely that this is just an abnormal lamb.’

The Giant Japanese Spider King Crab Legs has been dubbed Crabs Kong by staff at a UK aquarium, after being recognised as the biggest in captivity.

The monster from the deep - who measures 3m across and weighs 15kg - was originally caught in Japan by fishermen working from Suraga Bay, south-west of Tokyo.

However, rather than sell him to a local restaurant, the fishermen called UK-based biologist Robin James, who'd visited the village just weeks earlier.

He then arranged for the colossal crustacean to be spared the saucepan and be shipped to the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth. To go on show you understand, not to go on the menu.

Staff say Crab Kong is probably about 40-years-old and that he will be the temporary star of an exhibit at the Dorset attraction, before he's moved to a new permanent home in Munich.

It's a snail-paced solution to pollution problems.

But a St Petersburg waterworks is putting six giant gastropods to work monitoring emissions from a sewage incinerator.

The African snails, the size of small rats, are attached to sensors that will show them getting sick if they take in too much bad air.

Environmentalists have said the move is just a publicity stunt aimed at distracting attention from unsafe practices at the incinerator.

But the company, Vodokanal, said it was a serious attempt to improve control over what comes out of the smokestack.

The plant uses conventional gauges to check emissions, but company officials said it also wanted to keep an eye on compounds that might be produced in concentrations too low for the gauges to detect or that could harm humans if combined with other substances.

Olga Rublevskaya, director of wastewater disposal at Vodokanal, said: 'Live organisms won't deceive anyone about the danger of pollution.

'This is very strict control for us. Now we are under the watch of snails and crayfish all the time!'

The company is also using crayfish to monitor the quality of city water.

The snails, which grow up to eight inches long, live in a fish tank inside the city's Southwest Waste Water Treatment Plant.

They are attached to sensors that measure their heartbeat and other vital signs. Three breathe clean air, the other three diluted air coming from the plant's chimney.

If the sensors register an unfavourable change in their behaviour and condition, it would be an immediate signal that air coming from burnt sewage residue was dangerous.

'The African snails, which are able to live for up to seven years, will also help to test the influence of possible accumulating substances over a long period,' said Sergei Kholodkevich, an ecological researcher who dreamt up the idea of using the creatures.

Mr Kholodkevich, who works at an institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said he chose snails because they had lungs and breath air 'like people do'.

But Dmitry Artamonov, who heads Greenpeace's St Petersburg office, accused Vodokanal of hiding information about the plant's effects on the environment.

'The issue is that the local treatment facilities are meant for treatment of domestic waste, but not for treatment of industrial waste that contains toxic substances and also gets dumped into the sewage waters,' he said.

'As for snails, it can be hard for them to indicate the environmental danger immediately, because such substances as dioxins, for instance, can accumulate in an organism over a long period of time and only decades later provoke cancer.'

I’ve read and written about a some pretty unusual hotels, in the past, but this is the first chicken hotel I’ve ever heard of.

But what do you do if you go away on holiday? Who looks after the chicken?” asks Mr. Roberts, who opened his unusual establishment to encourage people to raise their own chicken. A former cabinet-maker, David Roberts built the chicken coops himself and now rents them for 2 pounds each, plus 75 pence per chicken.

Each coop in the Chicken Hotel holds up to eight chicken and the current offer includes buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner of local produce, served in open-air. Guests are allowed to roam around the hotel grounds all day, before being gathered to roost at night. According to Mr. Roberts, the hotel was fully booked over Christmas time, and he hopes half term and Easter will be just as successful.

Yup. It's a bucket full of cow eye, all right.

I'm sure he's right. My high school anatomy class once took a field trip to a cadaver lab at Kansas State University. Cow eyeballs have nothing on Rubbermaid tubs full of preserved human genitalia, still attached to disembodied hips and upper thighs. For some reason, those freaked out 17-year-old me way more than the still mostly-intact dead bodies.

A 17-year-old thoroughbred gelding in Chino Hills, Calif., is going into the record books, not for the speed of his feet but for the quickness of his mind.

The horse in question is Lukas, who is touted as the smartest horse in the world for the many amazing feats he's been able to master: 35 in all.

According to Karen Murdock, Lukas' owner and trainer, he is able to count and discern different shapes, spell his name and recognize the difference between objects that are the same and those that are different, those that are bigger or smaller than others and a concept called "absentness."

"Lukas knows when something is missing, and that is a skill that was previously only detected in primates and parrots," Murdock said.

But despite having an extremely high equine IQ, Lukas was absent from the Guinness World Records book until June, when Guinness finally created a record attempt for Lukas that fit in their criteria. Murdock believes AOL Weird News was partially responsible.

"I had been trying for years to get their attention, but they only contacted me after [AOL Weird News] did a story on him," she said. "I believe your story prompted them to do this."

Although Lukas did the record attempt in June, Murdock only received official confirmation on Nov. 20 when a certificate arrived acknowledging his world record.

For the record, Lukas is now the record holder in the category "Most Numbers Correctly Identified by a Horse in One Minute" after identifying 19 number in less than 60 seconds.

"This is the fastest we've ever done this," Murdock said, still amazed at her horse's remarkable achievement. "Guinness has very rigid specifications, so I couldn't praise him -- and that was hard!

"I do believe he wanted to his best. He was very focused and able to concentrate during the attempt."

But even though Lukas is an official record holder, he's not going to "saddle" for just one honor, according to Murdock.

"We're going to keep practicing," she promised. "Guinness wants another record involving recognizing shapes, but I'd like to do something with his sense of 'absentness,' but I don't know how you'd do it."

Some people might keep a valuable artifact like a Guinness certificate in a place of honor, but Murdock prefers to keep it close to her vest.

"I bring it everywhere with me and show it to everyone who asks," she said with a laugh.

67-year-old Nick Le Souef Australian Spider Man to Spend Three Weeks with Poisonous Spiders Imagine living in a confined space for three weeks with more than 300 spiders, including fatally venomous red backs and hairy huntsman.

Nick Le Souef, an Australian businessman from Melbourne, will do exactly that to raise 50,000 dollars for a children's charity.

Passersby will be able to see him in a shop window everyday surrounded by his eight-legged friends.

Souef, a former opal miner, says he will take just one precaution in his mission, he will be spider-free at night.

"The spiders can be roaming around me during the day. They won't have the opportunity to be crawling into my swag (camp bed) at night and sort of saying a quick hello - I mean I'm fairly silly doing this but I'm not stupid," he said.

To begin with, there were about 400 spiders until a 'massacre' happened when the creatures started eating one another.

So now, a few crickets and cockroaches will be thrown into the shop window each day to keep the remaining 300 satisfied.

Souef, who holds the Australian records for three-week stints in a snake pit and a shark tank, originally wanted to do the stunt with snakes, but licensing issues put a stop to that.

Though he does not care much for the spiders, Souef says he will put up with the creepy crawlies for charity and use this time to write his memoirs.

Chimpanzees celebrate wedding after arranged marriage A pair of chimpanzees have been married in a ceremony at a zoo in China - surrounded by photographers recording the happy occasion.

The happy groom for the day was four-year-old Yangyang, who it turns out is a bit of a toyboy (in chimpanzee years, at least), as his blushing bride Wanxing is six years old.

Admittedly, we don't actually know if she was blushing. We're not entirely sure how you'd tell if a chimpanzee was blushing. Do chimpanzees actually blush? Google isn't much help on this one.

The marriage was actually an arranged one - Yangyang, who was born in Guinea, moved to the wildlife park in Hefei, in eastern China's Anhui province after he was selected as being Wanxing's future hubby in 2009.

It wasn't a traditional white wedding - the bride wore a pink top and fetching multicoloured hat, while the groom wa sresplendant in a green, blue and yellow jumper and a rakish kerchief. Both also sported gigantic red ribbons, of dubious practicality.

The wedding was described as 'symbolic', although we're not entirely sure what it was symbolic of, other than the zoo's desire for the chimps to get it on good style. Which we're wholeheartedly in favour of.
